drew on defining personal style…

Our blog post day aligned perfectly with my birthday, so I thought it would be nice to give you all more insight on my own personal style.  Laura and I are strong advocates for creating a personal style that is uniquely your own and we believe that is one of the best reasons to hire personal stylists, like ACCESS | Style.

I distinctly remember actively deciding what my personal style would be back in high school, when I was stuck in a uniform day after day. At the time, I labeled my style “Urban Prep” which merged the classic preppy styling with the addition of an urban edge.

Years later, I now label my style as “Classics with a Twist.” Even though the phrasing is different, my current style actually has a similar aesthetic (thankfully with more refinement!). I really enjoy taking a classic look and layering in an element of surprise. Whether that be the addition of a studded detail on a classic monk strap shoe, an element of sheerness in an otherwise conservative look, or layering both traditionally masculine or feminine pieces together; it’s those unexpected pops that really make me feel excited to wear an outfit and also make me feel like I’m honoring my personal style.

As the years continue to go by, it has been an exciting challenge to curate a wardrobe that allows me to play with these unexpected elements.  Sourcing the unexpected leads you to many different boutiques and shops, which can be an exciting adventure in itself…I am itching to travel again so I can find some hidden gems!

My focus recently has been on ‘quality over quantity’ when it comes to my basics, where I am more willing to spend money on quality items and those more trendy pieces that I might wear once or twice get less of the budget. The cost per wear calculation is definitely a big factor now when I am shopping for these items, since they will serve as the foundation of every outfit.  However, my love for finding a deal is also a big part of my personal style because ‘quality’ does not always mean ‘expensive’.

I fully expect my style to change and grow, as I also will inevitably change and grow as a person, but I do think that incorporating unexpected, eye-catching elements will remain in my personal style for years to come.
