Closet Organization – Pros, Cons & diy tips
We all dream of the same thing – an enormous walk-in closet similar to that of Kim Kardashian (or any of the Kardashians for that matter), where endless luxurious clothes are delicately hung just begging to be worn and styled. The simple reality is that that dream may not be achievable for the vast majority of us, however; there are ways to update and organize your closet so that you FEEL like the Kardashians when you look at your own wardrobe.
Closet organization and even re-design is absolutely worth it, regardless of your wardrobe size. An organized and clean closet not only displays your clothing in such a way that makes it easy for you to physically see your items, but it also creates a space for your clothes to breathe and live wrinkle free. If you’ve been debating between updating your own wardrobe, let’s review some pros and cons…
PROS
FLEXIBILITY
Often times we move into houses or apartments with outdated closets and are unhappy with its current set-up. Either we have too many clothes for the hanging rod and items are sandwiched together getting wrinkled, or perhaps your shelving sticks too far out so it’s impossible to close your closet doors without some kind of long-sleeve shirt getting caught. We’ve all been there but guess what…you can change it! By renovating your closet, you give yourself the flexibility of creating a space that works for YOU!
ORGANIZATION
There are many ways to organize your wardrobe and they’re all the right ways, it simply just depends on how you’d like to organize your closet. Here are just a few ideas:
Organize by season. Hang all Summer clothes together, Fall clothes together, etc. You can also store your Fall and Winter clothes away during Spring and Summer if you’d like to create even more space in your closet. This is a very popular option for people and there are multiple affordable ways to store your off season clothes.
Organize by color. This is fairly self explanatory but hang all blue clothing items together, all red items together, and so on. If you’re a visually color coordinated individual who wakes up and says “I think I’ll wear yellow today” then this option is for you.
INVESTMENT
If you have purchased your home or condo, a closet re-design is a worthwhile investment for resale. A renovated closet could potentially increase the value of your home (not significantly, so it’s important to be realistic) and make the wardrobe more desirable to buyers.
CONS
PRICE
If you decide to go through a professional company for your closet reorg, the price tag can potentially be quite high. That being said, if you choose to go with a more affordable option via Container Store, you can select from multiple tiered options for updating your closet. If you don’t want to spend a fortune on the top tiered solution, take a closer look at the more affordable Elfa solutions.
DIY
If you opt to self-install via products found at the Container Store or Home Depot, and you’re not handy with tools, you may run into some installation issues or anxiety surrounding the install process. A DIY closet re-design is also often something that cannot be tackled alone. If you’re looking to tackle a DIY closet project and don’t live with a handy significant other, bring in a friend to help! This is the best way to ensure your overall safety.
