How to Open Up and Brighten a Space

In the forever search for the perfect home, many of us need to compromise on certain elements that fall lower on the priority list.  That often means needing to address dimly lit or small spaces, while maintaining your overall style aesthetic.  If you find yourself in this position, check out our 3 recommendations to trick your (and your guests’) eyes into thinking you have an open, bright space!

Mirrors

Placing mirrors on walls opposite the windows help bounce light across more of your space. Depending on the amount of light that comes through the actual window, it can actually make the space feel like there are double the actual amount of windows! Don’t have a window?...no problem! Another way to bounce light is to place mirrors behind or adjacent to accent lighting, which we will touch on next. Strategically placed mirrors can also trick the eye into seeing more visual space thanks to the reflection. Place the mirror along dividing walls in your space and/or dead space corners and they will reflect the space across it, giving the illusion of a larger space.

Accent Lighting

Another easy solution to open up and brighten a space is to add accent lighting. This additional lighting supplements the general lighting coming from chandeliers, recessed lighting, etc. and should be logically placed in areas that need more lighting when using the space. A common spot for accent lighting is next to the sofa or accent chair, to bring more light needed for reading. When adding accent lighting, finding an electrical outlet can present some issues, but don’t let that stop you. Battery operated light bulbs solve this problem and allow you to place the accent lighting wherever needed, without needing to worry about if an electrical outlet is nearby.

Neutral Colors

Bold colors or patterns can make the space feel busy and more visually cluttered. Styling your small or dimly lit space with muted, neutral colors can also help open up and brighten your space. This includes keeping wall paint, larger furniture pieces, and rugs all in a neutral color palette. A monochrome look is the easiest way to achieve this trick, but if that is not your style you can have fun with accents! A bold accent wall, patterned accent pillows, or bold colored accent furniture are ways to layer in your personality, while still keeping an overall neutral look to keep the space open and bright.

These are just a few ways to trick the eye into thinking any space is more bright and up than it really is. There are more tips and tricks where that came from! Reach out to the AS Team for customized recommendations for your space!
